Labia Reduction Surgery

by Andrew W John

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that is designed to adjust the size and shape of a woman’s labial area through paring back an area that is thought to be too fleshy. The vaginal and labial areas can often be places that are very problematic for women, and given the fact that the appearance of the labia themselves are usually beyond a woman’s control, this can add to the stress.

Childbirth, intercourse and aging can all contribute to changes in the appearance of a woman’s labia minora and labia majora. A labia which is seen as being too large, or noticeably asymmetrical can lead a woman to opt for this procedure. Overly large labia can also lead to infections and swelling from routine abrasion, as well as causing self-consciousness and discomfort.

Women who are still growing should not have this procedure, or most other plastic surgeries for that matter. Patients should be done developing and in all around good health before undergoing a labiaplasty. Those with certain conditions should not have the surgery. A plastic surgeon can give you detailed information on who can and cannot have a labiaplasty. This is still a relatively uncommon procedure, so your surgeon will likely specialize in the procedure and thusly be something of an expert on it.

The procedure itself is usually fairly straightforward, and you will find that it will depend heavily on what the end effect is to be. The precise details will depend on whether you want the outer lips, known as the labia majora, or the inner lips, known as the labia minor, reduced, or whether both will be reduced. This procedure usually lasts around two hours, and due to the fact that it is performed under local anesthesia, it is considered outpatient surgery. While some doctors will use tolls that are similar to the scissors used for face lifts, others prefer using a scalpel.

Bruising and swelling are normal following the procedure, but this will go away in a few weeks. Antibiotics and analgesics are often prescribed during recovery. If antibiotics have been prescribed to you, eat yogurt or take acidophilus supplements during the recovery period to ensure a healthy bacterial balance in your body. There will also be a list of things not to do during recovery to ensure successful healing.

A labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that has changed many lives. If it is a procedure that interests with you, speak with a board-certified plastic surgeon and find out what it can do for you.
